All six are in this build’s uploads folder and are used below as the real images. That pairing is why the
no-slider options work at all: showing every fact means showing every photograph.
Why the block is still the weakest on the page: 948px — most of a screen — carrying
one of six facts at a time; the firm’s strongest proof (a unanimous Supreme Court of Canada decision) is one
rotation among six; “Did you know?” files a Supreme Court win under trivia; nothing is clickable; and the
panel names one lawyer while the client’s brief insists the firm is teams, not individual lawyers.
⚠ Type-size disclosure — read every height on this page with this in mind. The
site’s body scale is 15–15.5px (cards 15px, the current facts panel 15.5px/1.85). To fit six verbatim
facts on one screen, most options here run their paragraphs at 13–13.5px — two steps below it. The
compact heights quoted are therefore partly bought with smaller type, not layout alone. This was tested on
K13·S2 at the full 15.5px (~780px) and returned to 13.5px (~660px) by the designer’s decision, with
the trade known. Recorded here so the number is never mistaken for a free saving: if the six facts are ever shortened,
the type can go back up at no cost in height.
⚠ Copy is reproduced exactly, including two problems in it. Neither is a designer’s to fix
— both need Darren.
- “7 years in a row – 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 & 2025” lists seven years but
skips 2024, so “in a row” is wrong as printed. Kept verbatim here so the error is visible rather
than silently patched.
- “the reader’s of Victoria News” — apostrophe error in the live copy; should be
“readers”. Also kept verbatim.
- Fact 3 expires this year: “opened in its Westside Village home in 2014” contradicts the November
move to the new office. Rewrite as history or retire it — same flag as the footer address.

Even panels make that gap a feature of the design rather than an accident — or the copy gets levelled, which is Darren’s call.

~790pxThe one option that answers the standing criticism at the top of this page: the firm’s strongest proof is currently one rotation among six. Here the Supreme Court of Canada fact leads at double width on the brown panel with a large photograph, and the other five run as quiet cards around it. Not all facts are equal, and this is the only layout on the page that says so. The cost is that the ordering becomes an editorial decision someone has to own — and the lead card is fixed, so it cannot rotate. Also the shortest option in the whole round, because the five supporting facts run as compact rows instead of full cards — the only one here that beats the 948px block it replaces without shrinking the type. The five supporting rows also drop the icon — at 104px the thumbnail does that job already.

~900pxThe photograph replaces the icon rather than sitting beside it: cut to the brand hexagon, at the exact size and position the reference gives its icon. This is the option that ties the layout to the rest of the site — the same hexagon as the section badge, the vlog play button and the team portraits. It also removes the weakest ingredient of the set: no stock FontAwesome glyph is doing any work here, so the “icons are placeholders” caveat stops applying. Trade: the pictures are small, so they must survive being read at 96px — the award and the front door do, the harbour and the seaplane mostly become texture.

K29Quiet cards — hexagon on the seam, right, 3:2 photograph
~1160pxK21 with one joint changed: the icon moves down onto the seam between photograph and panel, in an orange hexagon that overlaps both. It is the smallest change in the round and the one that most makes the card look built rather than assembled — the picture and the panel stop being two stacked rectangles. The hexagon also brings the brand shape back, which K21 and K25 do without. Revised 2026-08-23 on Adi’s note that the picture looked squashed: the photograph is now a true 3:2 frame (set with aspect-ratio, so it holds 3:2 at any column width) instead of a fixed 134px band, which at this card width was nearly 3:1. The text block was tightened to rebalance against it — smaller heading, tighter padding, tighter leading — but the paragraph stays at 15px: the weight came out of the spacing, not the reading size. The cost is real and is in the height above: a 3:2 frame is ~274px per card against 134px, so the section grows ~280px and this becomes the tallest option in the round. If that height is unacceptable, the lever is K23’s geometry — two cards per row keeps a large 3:2 photograph and gives the text a wider measure at the same time. Revised again 2026-08-23: the hexagon moved from the left of the seam to the right, which also matches the reading direction — the eye finishes the line and meets it, instead of colliding with it before the heading starts. Four modern treatments of this card follow.

ROUND 8cK29 — hexagon moved right, four modern treatmentsThe hexagon now sits on the right of the seam in K29 and in all four variants below. “More modern” is not one thing, so it is asked here as four separate positions: M1 softens the card (rounded, white, shadow), M2 deletes the card entirely, M3 keeps the card and turns the section dark, M4 interlocks the card’s two halves. All four hold the 3:2 frame, the 15px paragraph and the same headings. One number applies to the whole set: they all land between ~1050px and ~1160px. A 3:2 photograph plus six verbatim facts at real reading size sets that floor, and no styling choice moves it — if the height has to come down, the lever is geometry (two cards per row, or K27’s lead-plus-five), never decoration. Everything declared for round 8 still stands: Raleway not serif, warm grey not cool, and the headings are new copy needing Darren’s sign-off.
K29·M1Modern — soft card, rounded
~1160pxThe mainstream modern card: the grey moves out to the section, the card becomes white with 16px rounded corners and a soft shadow, and it lifts off the page. Reads current immediately — and that is the thing to be careful about. Rounded corners are a deviation from the brand system, which is built on hard edges and a pointy-top hexagon; every other component on this site (header, buttons, badge, hive, cards) is square-cornered. Choosing this is choosing to soften the whole system, not just this section, so it belongs in the brand guide rather than in a section decision. The hexagon against the rounded card is a deliberate shape clash and is the part most worth judging with your own eye.

~1150pxModern by removal. No panel, no border, no shadow, no rounding — a 3:2 photograph, a wide gap, the heading and the fact, and nothing else. The hexagon on the seam is then the only ornament on the card, which is what makes it work. This is the option most in keeping with what the direction document actually asks for — distinctiveness from information design rather than decoration — and it is the one that will still look current in five years, because there is nothing on it to date. The hexagon is inset 26px from the right edge to match the other three — with no panel around it, sitting flush read as falling off the card rather than resting on it. Revised 2026-08-23: the section ground is now the same warm grey (#F1EFEB) the panels use elsewhere in this round, rather than white — which has the useful side effect of making M1 and M2 a clean single-variable comparison: same grey band, same 3:2 frames, the only difference being whether there is a card at all.

~1060pxThe panel is pulled up over the foot of the photograph and inset from the card edges, so the picture reads as bigger than its frame and the two parts of the card interlock instead of stacking. The hexagon sits on the top-right corner of the raised panel, where it now overlaps both the photograph and the panel — the seam idea taken all the way. Most composed of the four, and the one that most needs the photographs to be well cropped, because the panel covers the lower third of every frame.
