Section 2, The Problem: thirteen treatments

Thirteen ways to build the same section, with the copy left exactly as AISV wrote it. Nothing is added, cut or reworded; what changes is the arrangement.

What is actually wrong with the version on the page, so these can be judged against a fault rather than against taste. It is a stack, not a composition: heading, two paragraphs, a box, a paragraph, a button, all at one width in one column, arranged in order rather than arranged. The card is invisible: white with a #E4E4E4 border on a white band has almost no figure-ground separation, so the one object in the section does not read as an object. Seven items in two columns leaves an orphan, a half-empty final row that looks like a mistake. The seven questions have no internal rhythm, they are seven equal underlined rows, which is how a list looks before anyone has designed it. And the brand is absent: no NIGHT, no gold, no cream, so the section could belong to any firm.

All of them fix the stack and the orphan structurally. They differ in how far they go on the other three. None uses an image.

AStatement left, questions rightThe single change that fixes the most: the section stops being a stack and becomes a composition. The argument, the closing line and the call to action hold the left column; the seven questions run down the right as a numbered list. Numbering does real work here, it gives seven equal items a rhythm and tells the reader the set is finite. No box at all, so nothing has to be made visible with a border.

Your Business Has Grown. Has Your Legal Protection Grown With It?

When your business was smaller, handling legal needs one project at a time may have worked.

Now, you have employees, larger clients, more valuable contracts, new partnerships, and greater responsibility. The decisions you make carry more risk, and the legal questions keep getting more complicated.

You should not have to wait for a lawsuit, security incident, unpaid invoice, or enormous legal bill to discover that your business was not adequately protected.

Are our client contracts protecting us?

03

How much will it cost just to get an answer?

BThe matrixThe list becomes one object. A four-by-two grid drawn with 1px gaps over a tinted ground, so the dividers ARE the grid rather than seven separate borders, and the eighth cell is the call to action, which is what closes the orphan row the current two-column layout leaves open. It is the most structured of the five and the closest to Direction B’s own language of bounded objects with hard borders and no shadow.

CThe questions on NIGHTThe section gets a figure and a ground. White carries the argument, then the seven questions sit on a NIGHT panel where they become the thing the visitor remembers. It is the only option that brings the brand into a section that currently has none of it, and it also fixes the invisible-card problem by inverting it: the object is now the darkest thing on the screen rather than the faintest.

DEditorialThe box is removed entirely and typography does the work: seven rows at full measure, numerals in a 64px rail, questions at 21px with hairlines between and generous space around each. It is the quietest and the most elegant, and the only one where a visitor reads the questions rather than scans them. The cost is height, since seven full-width rows is a longer section than a two-column grid.

EThe left railA pattern rather than a layout. Every section gets a named rail on the left holding its label and a short gold rule, with the content in a fixed measure to the right. It solves this section and eight others at the same time, gives the page a spine it currently lacks, and is the option that would most change how the whole page reads. Judge it as a page-wide decision, not a section fix.

FThe counterScale does the work. A single 132px numeral against 15px type is the most reliable elegance available in a system with one typeface and no photographs, and it costs nothing to build. It also states the promise of the section before the reader starts: seven, a finite number, not an open list of worries. The caption under the numeral is new copy and would go to AISV; everything else is theirs, unchanged.

GThe hard splitThe only option that leaves the container. Two half-viewport grounds meet on the centre line, NIGHT carrying the argument and white carrying the questions, with content aligned inward from both sides so the meeting line is the composition. It is the biggest visual change on the sheet and the one that would most alter the rhythm of the page, since every other section is a bounded 1440px band.

HCentred, flowing columnsThe section rhymes with the hero: both centred, both holding a fixed measure. The questions run in three CSS columns, which means the BROWSER balances them, so the orphan row cannot happen at any count. Add or remove a question later and the shape stays correct with no layout edit, which no grid-based option here can claim.

IThe minimum honest fixNothing is rearranged. The ground changes from white to tint, the card loses its grey border, and the questions get numbers. A white card on a white band is invisible, and that alone is most of the "no effort" reading; on tint the same card becomes an object and the section gains a colour it did not have. Worth seeing because if this is enough, the other eight options are spending effort that could go to sections 5 through 9.

G1Cream and whiteLAW cream on the left, white on the right: a warm ground against a cool one. It is the closest light equivalent to what NIGHT was doing, because the two halves read as two different materials rather than two shades of the same one. Cream is already the page’s ground for section 3, so this also lets the split introduce a colour the page uses later instead of one it uses once. NIGHT headings sit at 11.5:1 on it.

G2Tint and whiteThe same structure in the cool register: FREEDOM tint at its palest against white. Quieter than cream and more neutral, which suits a section whose job is to state a problem plainly rather than to warm the reader up. It is the most restrained of the four, and the one that most keeps the visitor’s attention on the questions.

G3Brand gradient and whiteThe left half carries the brand gradient rather than a flat colour, so the split is made from the brand’s own device instead of a tint chosen for it. It also gives the section some depth without any object, shadow or image. Watch it against the hero: the hero already sits on a gradient, and using the device twice in the first two screens can make it read as wallpaper rather than as a brand mark.

G4One rule, no colourNo ground change at all. Both halves are white and the split is drawn by a single hairline running the full height, so the composition survives on alignment alone. It is the most elegant and the most simple of everything on this sheet, and the biggest risk: with no colour to hold them apart, the two halves depend entirely on the rule and on the space around it, which means the padding is doing structural work and cannot be trimmed later.

If you want one: A. It fixes the most for the least, it needs no new colour and no new object, and numbering seven questions is the cheapest rhythm available. B is the right answer if the section should end on a call to action rather than a sentence. C is the one to pick if the page needs the brand to appear before section 5, which it arguably does.

E is a different kind of decision. It is a page-wide pattern, so choosing it means restyling every section, not this one.
