The hero photograph — five treatments
The photograph is in the page — five treatments of it here. The subject is settled; what is
open is colour, because the picture arrived as cool neutral grey and the hero sits on a
FREEDOM gradient with a warm LAW cream offset block behind it. Three colours, none of them agreeing.
One thing to flag that is not about colour: this is the City of London — the ribbed tower
is the Lloyd’s building, which is recognisable to anyone who knows it. For a firm whose states are
Washington, Oregon and Colorado that is worth a conscious decision rather than an accident. It reads
as “a city” to most viewers and as “London” to some.

The problem is colour temperature. The photograph is cool neutral grey; the offset block behind it is LAW cream, a warm colour. Side by side the cream reads yellow and the photograph reads like a stock image dropped onto a brand rather than part of it. The greyscale also shares nothing with the FREEDOM gradient it sits on.

2NIGHT duotone — cream offsetMy recommendation. The photograph is mapped onto the brand: shadows go to NIGHT, highlights to a near-white. Nothing about the picture changes — the same building, the same crop — but it now belongs to the palette instead of sitting beside it, and the cream offset reads as intentional warmth against a cool image rather than as a mismatch.
A duotone is also the cheapest way to make any future stock photograph look like it was shot for this firm. It is a recipe, not a one-off edit.
