# **What Heathrow Is Known For**

Heathrow is the busiest airport in Europe and the long-haul hub for British Airways and the One World Alliance, which makes it as much a shopping and lounge destination as a place to catch a flight. It's also home to one of the largest World Duty Free operations anywhere, spread across all four terminals, and to some of the most exclusive airline lounges in the world inside Terminal 5\. The tradeoff for all that scale is a genuinely confusing layout: the four terminals are really four separate airports bolted together, and which one you land in changes almost everything about your visit, from which lounge you can reach to how far you'll walk for a decent meal.

# **Terminals and Airlines**

Heathrow splits neatly along alliance lines, which makes it easy to guess your terminal from your airline.

# **Lounges**

Heathrow has roughly 44 lounges in total, so the honest answer to "which is best" depends entirely on your terminal. In Terminal 5, British Airways' Concorde Room is the standout — First class and Gold Guest List only, with table-service dining, private cabanas and a spa — followed by Galleries First, which is quieter and better fed than the busier Galleries Club rooms. Note that BA announced a multi-year renovation of its T5 lounges in late 2025, so check current status before you fly. Terminal 2 has nine lounges split across the main building and the T2B satellite, including Lufthansa's Business and Senator lounges, Singapore Airlines' SilverKris, and United's Club and Global Services lounges. Terminals 2, 3, and 4 each also carry a Plaza Premium and a No1 Lounge, both bookable directly or through Priority Pass — the most reliable fallback if your airline or cabin doesn't get you in anywhere else.

# **Fast Track and Terminal Transfers**

If you don't have elite status or flying in a premium cabin, Heathrow sells its own Fast Track security pass for £12.50: you pick a one-hour arrival window (06:00 to 21:00, bookable up to midday the day before) and typically clear security in five to ten minutes. Connecting between terminals is where people get caught out — if your flights are on one ticket with bags checked through, a free airside shuttle bus runs between all four terminals every ten minutes, but you'll still need to clear a security re-screen at the arrival terminal, and the full transfer commonly takes 25 to 60 minutes. Book two separate tickets instead, and it's a full landside re-entry: immigration, bag claim, check-in, and security again from scratch. Build the extra time in either way.

# **Food and Drink**

Terminal 5 has the deepest bench: Gordon Ramsay Plane Food Market for all-day dining, Pilots Bar & Kitchen for a 1950s-themed British menu, and The Globe, an independent craft beer spot before security. Wagamama shows up in both Terminal 3 and Terminal 5 for a reliable, family-friendly option, and every terminal has the usual Costa, Caffè Nero, Pret, and M\&S Simply Food for a quick bite between gates.

# **Duty Free at Heathrow**

World Duty Free runs the show in all four terminals, but Terminal 5 is the flagship store, with a dedicated whisky room, a full champagne and wine cellar, and the airport's largest fragrance hall. Terminal 3 isn't far behind on spirits and beauty variety, while Terminal 2 leans into beauty brands like Lancôme, Estée Lauder, and Burberry alongside a strong whisky and fine wine selection. # **Getting To and From Heathrow**

Heathrow sits about 16 miles (25km) west of central London. The Heathrow Express is the fastest option at 15 minutes non-stop to Paddington (plus a few extra minutes from Terminal 5), the Elizabeth line takes 26 to 45 minutes depending on your destination and costs less, and the Piccadilly line is the cheapest but slowest at around 50 minutes, serving all four terminals directly. For rideshare, Uber and Bolt both operate pickup zones in the short-stay car park at every terminal, and FreeNow dispatches licensed black cabs through its app — Lyft and Grab don't operate in London, so skip those for this profile (Lyft is the one to flag for US airports like JFK, Grab for Singapore Changi).
